These are a few of my favorite things....

Patty Griffin's first album is flat out my favorite album of the last few years. I have never heard someone give it all like she does on this record. Just a guitar and vocal, it was originally recorded as a demo. She re-cut it with a band, then decided to release the DAT demo. Great choice! If you don't have it...get it immediately.

Her new album (Flaming Red) is very good though I would like to hear her with a little more of a pared down sound on some songs. The band sound I think dilutes her power a bit. Still, this record runs rings around almost everything else out there.

Amy Rigby put out a fantastic album a few years ago that so deserves to have been a hit. Whenever I go see her with friends, they are always knocked out. The first album was called Diary of a Mod Housewife. It is a gem. It's great to find a songwriter doing songs about grown-ups.

The second album, out last year is called Middlescence, is also good stuff. Definitely recommended.

Kelly Willis put out a few over produced country albums back in the early 90's and then was dropped by her label. Rykodisc picked her up last year and she responded with a CD I can't get off the player. A very interesting country tinged voice, that sounds as good live as on record, good songwriting by several writers and great production have all come together on this disc. Get it!
Great album with lots of interesting songwriting. Son of Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle, he has put out one of the better debut albums of the last few years.

Amanda Thorpe just knocked me out when I saw her at the Sandy Denny Tribute benefit concert at St Ann's Church last year. I've gotten a chance to see her live a few times recently and it's confirmed my first impression. Amanda is a real talent as a songwriter and musician. Her CD (which sounds just fantastic-I have a preview copy) will come available soon and I plan on playing it for as many people as I can.
